the end of the cold war
The Fall of the Berlin Wall was one of the final moments of the Cold War. This is what truly stated that this fighting between the USSR and the US was over and that they needed to give other countries their own land back. This truly brought some of the darkest times to an end for many nations and families.

LeadersRonald Reagan was President of the United States during the 1980’s. From 1981-1989. He is the one who oversaw the Cold War and wanted to end it. His famous line was “Tear Down This Wall” in 1989 when he goes to Berlin to give his speech that we have had enough and that the war needs to be over. The wall was a dark symbol of the United States and the Soviet Union and he wanted to tear that down and call the whole war quits. This speech was addressed at the last General Secretary of the Communist Party in the USSR, Mickail Gorbachev.

fall of the wallThe Berlin Wall was officially broken down in 1989. The symbol of this was to show that communism was breaking down as the wall was torn down. The wall was put up for years, this separated families and friends very quickly. There was no escaping the wall because if you tried to go over there was a high chance of you getting shot. When it was torn down this allowed the East and West to reunite. To follow this the Soviet Union gave up control of most of eastern Europe. They gave up communism, dictatorships and they adapted democratic and capitalistic characters.

end of the warAmericans were shocked at the dissolution of the USSR which means that nobody really won. Since 1945 had feared and have been enemies with the Soviet Union. We’ve been through the space race, the Cuban missile crisis, proxy wars, lost thousands of lives, and much more. The US had spent trillions of dollars during this time period in anticipation of something that never happened. There was no peace treaty that was signed or anything to show that the war was truly over. 1991 was basically the official end of the war and the start of the new history in the 2000's.
