Past RolesWomen were treated much differently before the 80's and recent days. They had specific roles laid out for them unless they got lucky with a husband to allow her to do what she wanted (which was very rare). The general role for them was to get married right out of school and to start having kids to keep the "typical family" rate up. They were to stay at home and cook, clean, and watch the children as the husband went out to make money. They didn't get a lot of freedom back then until there were big movements later on.

modern rolesAs women rejected the housewife role and chose careers, marriage and kids were pushed back. The birth rates started to go down because they were getting more full time jobs so they weren’t around to take care of the children. Divorces skyrocket because they were very unhappy in their relationship but now that they were getting more rights, they had that financial stability. By 1980 there were more female undergraduates than male which was a big step for women since they had that freedom to get and education and live their own lives.

Reproductive RightsBirth control became popular this gave them the power to decide when they want kids. This was a big no-no before they were gaining rights because it was against the standard role of the housewife to not have kids. Because of the Catholic Church, many states made birth control illegal. The Supreme court case Griswald. V. Connecticut ruled that such laws were unconstitutional to outlaw birth control. The rates of premarital sex raised a lot because of this protection. The rates of couples living together before marriage increased a lot.
